Entire House Renovation
Entire House Renovation Project 1:

This project’s goal was to transform a small, dark rambler into a larger home, add a bedroom and bathroom, designed for casual comfort and an active family lifestyle. Space was balanced between open and intimate areas, keeping in mind a large collection of international objects d’art and furnishings, including a pair of 12’ tall Moroccan doors.

A second story and small additions were added. The roof and several walls were removed, creating a volume ceiling with open clerestory framing, increasing the size of all the rooms. An open stairwell brings light through three stories. Circulation was improved, light levels were increased, and traffic flow was enhanced. The clerestory section provides height for the display of the Moroccan doors.

Neutral interior hues, stone textures and wooden trim create a natural backdrop upon which to display the ethnic artifacts. Concealing light fixtures in non-structural beams allows light to be aimed at the objects d’art. Fireplace textures and stone visually lower the high ceiling; stone is repeated on the kitchen hoodvent. Consistency in style and colors is followed throughout; large windows and French doors connect the house with its woodsy setting, reinforcing the natural and casual tone.

Twenty-two foot long laminated veneer lumber (LVL) beams supported by exposed 4"x 6" fir posts support the clerestory. Structural beams were wrapped in clear cypress, which was also used for the custom interior trim. The renovation included the installation of high capacity phone/data transmission system and security system.
